Methane is a valuable and useful product & it is a powerful ‘greenhouse’ gas (GHG). It is vented during Oil & Gas production, along with ‘VOC’ gases that create smog. Methane is an important GHG because it’s 25x to 84x more potent than CO2.
SmartRam™ Innovative ‘Muscle’ Linear Actuator Technology
Enables ZERO-EMISSION of Methane/VOC for O&G valve venting pollution. Step- change and more-affordable compared to incumbents, and with a large net savings for O&G operators
Presently, 95+% of onshore North-American wellsite separators use natural-gas-pneumatics to power intermittent failsafe spring-return dump valves. In 2020, ~1.3 million intermittent/Dump-Valves exist, & is largest source of production methane/VOC emissions (~51% in 2019 [USA]). A low-cost zero-emission electric spring-return actuator for DVs is strongly desired for safe electric automation efficiency, but this answer does not exist.
In the US there are approximately 2 million pneumatic devices, of which 70% are intermittent dump valves and provides the biggest opportunity for methane reduction.
Our patented SmartRam™ technology is based on trade-secret military-proven “electric muscle” SMA technology that has already been successfully used on applications for ultra-reliable and hostile environments in aerospace, astrospace and underwater use areas.
LMT’s Trade Secret SMA muscle technology has high-cycle life with precision control and provides very Fast ON and Fast OFF duty-cycle required for intermittent service succes. SmartRam™ is completely size scalable and can compactly bolt-on to numerous pre-existing actuators, pumps and controls, which are now used in many different markets.
LMT’s single-moving-part SMA “electric muscle” drive, SmartRam™ Linear Actuator can eliminate +80% of the complex parts that are normally used in competitive electric powered (rotary electric - motor + gear-train driven) products. This increased simplicity delivers significant reliability and hardware savings.
For uses that need/require ultra-reliability and maximum-safety “failsafe spring-return” needed for an emergency shutdown to close a “critical control” valve actuators during a ‘total loss of power’ situation, LMT “electric muscle” actuators allow for simple retention of this spring-return benefit.
